Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews are hard at work as they begin clearing the roadway after a rock slide blocked both directions of South Lakeshore Road / SR 971 near the Monument at milepost 11.
Blasting began today, Feb. 19 around noon, in an effort to stabilize the area so crews could safely clear the large rock.
WSDOT Maintenance Lead Technician Shelby Winkle said after the blasts today, the area is “as stable as Mother Nature allows.”
Winkle added that there are large slabs of rock in the pile that the crews will blast into more manageable pieces for moving.
WSDOT is moving the rock off to the sides of the road and will keep the debris there until later this Spring.
