Judging by the crowd on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, this year’s 7th annual Mahogany & Merlot Vintage Boat Show at Lake Chelan was a big success. There were an incredible number of classic wooden boats to look at by manufacturers like Garwood, Stancraft and Chris Craft. Vintage racing boats and hydroplanes filled the pits, and those who purchased pit passes were treated to a close-up view of some incredible machinery.
The Seattle Hydroplane & Race Boat Museum brought over their usual mix of limited thunderboats including Oh Boy Oberto, Miss Thriftway, Miss Bardahl, and Miss Wahoo. One of the highlights of the weekend was at noon on Sunday when Mira Slovak’s bi-plane roared over Lake Chelan as David Willams, Executive Director of the museum, drove Miss Wahoo around the course.
Miss Wahoo was driven to victory by Slovak in a number of hydroplane races during the late 1950s.
