Lake Chelan EMS Teams Top in CPR Saves
Lake Chelan Community Hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS), with other Chelan and south Douglas County EMS teams, top state in CPR saves
News comes during National EMS Week, which promotes safety and honors the dedication of those who provide day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine’s “front line.”
Lake Chelan Community Hospital’s EMS, with other Chelan and south Douglas county EMS teams, was recently recognized as first in Washington state for the highest percentage of cardiac saves in 2012, knocking King County from the top of the list.
This major accomplishment comes after LCCH paramedic and EMS operations manager Ray Eickmeyer brought a new CPR protocol back to the region after completing a resuscitation training in 2010. The new program was implemented county wide in 2011, and the percentage of cardiac saves increased significantly as a result. Eickmeyer is pictured second from the right in both photos.
As part of EMS week, LCCH EMS will participate in a disaster drill Wednesday, May 22 that involves more than 30 youth from the Chelan High School’s Medclub. In June, they will offer a bike rodeo at Chelan’s elementary school and a SafeSitter two-day workshop, as well as their regular bi-monthly First aid, CPR and AED class. For more information, call 682-6120, visit lakechelanhospital.com or email
.
The Lake Chelan Community Hospital EMS has carried on the work of the Lake Chelan Valley Ambulance Association since 1987 by providing prompt, quality medical care and transportation. They are a community-supported public service that provides paramedic-level advanced life support to residents and visitors. Working in conjunction with the community's fire departments, law enforcement, US Forest Service and the National Parks Service, LCCH EMS responds to over 1,000 requests for aid each year.

Guild Y Purchases New Tissue Freezer for Hospital

Guild Y Purchases New Tissue Freezer for Hospital
Local hospital guild donates $5,000 to Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation for the purchase of a new tissue freezer in the hospital’s operating room.

Lake Chelan Community Hospital just got a new addition to its operating room, thanks to a generous gift from Hospital Guild Y. The Guild recently donated $5,000 to Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation to purchase the hospital’s first tissue freezer.
“We’re excited to support something that is high need and directly involved in the patient experience,” said Guild Y Treasurer Bernice McCulley. “I hope I don’t need to use the tissue freezer; but if I do, I’m glad it’s there.”
The tissue freezer will be used to store allografts—or human tissue samples—at Lake Chelan Community Hospital. Most rural hospitals that conduct grafting procedures rely on allografts to be kept on dry ice during surgeries. A tissue freezer will allow for increased safety, increased supply of available allografts, and long-term cost savings. It ensures that a gift received from a human tissue donor will be used as it was intended.
“Healthcare is so vital to our community,” said Guild Y President Susan McKinnon. “It’s an impressive piece of equipment, and we're really happy about donating money for this cause.”
Guild Y began in 1965 and currently has 22 members. Guild Y operates in coordination with Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation. The Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation actively manages donor contributions, bequests, memorials, donor advised funds, endowments and an annual giving campaign. Each year the Foundation awards scholarships and assists the hospital to purchase necessary equipment to improve patient care.
The Foundation is incorporated and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. Contributions are tax deductible under IRS regulations. For additional information, contact Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation at 509-682-6125. Donations to the Foundation can be made at www.lcchfoundation.com.

National Hospital Week Puts Spotlight on People
A hospital is more than a place where people go to heal, it is a part of the community that fosters health and represents hope. From providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world, hospitals are central to a healthy and optimistic community.
That’s the message organizers are touting with the 2013 National Hospital Week theme “A Guiding Light for Changing Times.” The event theme is the centerpiece of a promotional campaign aimed at uniting healthcare facilities across the country during the May 12–18 celebration.
“National Hospital Week, first and foremost, is a celebration of people,” said Kevin Abel, CEO of Lake Chelan Community Hospital (LCCH). “We’re extremely proud of each member of our staff and we recognize the important role they play in extending a sense of trust to our patients and our communities.”
The nation’s largest healthcare event, National Hospital Week dates back to 1921 when it was suggested by a magazine editor who hoped a community wide celebration would alleviate public fears about hospitals. The celebration, launched in Chicago, succeeded in promoting trust and goodwill among members of the public and eventually spread to facilities across the country.

Due to strong support among community members, Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation can now celebrate the success of reaching its $30,000 goal. The funds will be used to finance the purchase of a new coagulation instrument for Lake Chelan Community Hospital’s lab.
“It feels really good to be able to give a check of this size to advance healthcare services in our community,” said Foundation President Steve Palmbush. “This has been our most successful giving campaign in five years.”
Over 150 donors including hospital employees, Foundation board members, local businesses and community members united to reach this fundraising goal. Positive results from the Foundation’s holiday direct mail appeal were fundamental to the success of the campaign.
“We’re thrilled to receive such community support,” said Hospital Lab Manager Sally Harper. “Coagulation testing is very important for emergency room patients, as well as for patients who are taking special medications. This is a great investment for our community’s healthcare needs.”
A coagulation instrument is commonly used when monitoring patients suffering from heart and stroke related issues. It is also an essential component to the hospital’s TeleStroke program, which connects directly to a stroke team at Swedish Hospital, allowing local providers to administer medication that saves lives and brain function.
Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation actively manages donor contributions, bequests, memorials, donor advised funds, endowments and an annual giving campaign. Each year the Foundation awards scholarships and assists the hospital to purchase necessary equipment to improve patient care.
Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation was organized in 1981. The Foundation is incorporated and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. Contributions are tax deductible under IRS regulations.

The Lake Chelan Community Hospital and GET FIT! Lake Chelan invite the community to a special event to meet Dr. Brian Barstad, new medical director at LCCH. Dr. Barstad will give a short presentation on heart health at the event, held Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 3:30 PM at The Vogue in Chelan.
Barstad, who has experience as both a family physician and an ER doctor, grew up in a small town in Minnesota and believes in practicing medicine with a human touch. ""Being a doctor is just as much about sitting at a bedside with a grandma and holding her hand," he said, "and because of my family practice experience, I think I offer personal touches to our ER patients that make them more comfortable."
In addition to personalized care, Dr. Barstad's special passion is saving the lives of patients who come to the ER with heart issues. Barstad lights up when talking about the treatment he offers in those crisis situations. He will talk about that care in his presentation at The Vogue.
Barstad graduated from medical school at the University of North Dakota and finished his internship at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Georgia. He also spent four years in active duty in the Navy as a general medical officer before starting a nine-year family practice in Fargo.
During that period, he began working part-time in his hospital's ER and eventually transitioned into practicing ER medicine exclusively. He also spent three years working in an ER in Montana before coming to Chelan.
Drawn to the Lake Chelan community for its mountains and vibrant community, Dr Barstad and his wife, a nurse, look forward to enjoying local outdoor activities like skiing, hiking and fishing.

A simple, one-hour educational program, QPR teaches ordinary citizens how to recognize a mental health emergency and how to get a person at risk the help they need. Participants learn three simple steps to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis, offer hope, get help and save a life.
Arnold and Thomas began teaching QPR this year and will offer a class at St. Andrews church in Chelan on February 13 at noon. Community members are invited, but the class is limited to 30 participants. Please email Thomas at
to reserve a space.
Lake Chelan Community Hospital chose to get involved in suicide prevention after several suicides occurred in the valley. “We knew we couldn’t just sit back,” said Brad Hankins, LCCH COO, “so we started a local discussion about the problem and eventually partnered with SPCNCW, a group with similar concerns and goals in Wenatchee.”
The hospital’s first outreach regarding suicide prevention was a free educational event called “Coming Together for Life” held last August at the Chelan High School. Attendees participated in sessions about both adult and teen suicide. Representatives from regional suicide prevention and support agencies were also in attendance to answer questions and share information.
About 50 community members were trained in QPR later last year, when LCCH offered two free courses taught by a trainer from the Division of Veterans Affairs. “We saw a positive response and recognized the need for more education,” said Hankins.
Arnold and Thomas were trained in December and have committed to teach 80 people a piece this year. Their training and class materials were paid for by grants received by SPCNCW. To learn more about the coalition, visit www.SPCNCW.com or like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SPCofNCW.
If you would like a free one-hour QPR presentation for your local group or business, please contact Thomas at 682-3300 #6400 or email .

Regional Hospice Foundation elects new 2013-2014 Board of Directors
Hospice Foundation of North Central Washington recently announced its 2013-2014 Board of Directors, featuring a high-caliber panel of regional leaders. “I’m thrilled with the momentum our organization has gained in such a short period of time,” said President Mary Signorelli. “Our 2013-2014 Board of Directors is made up of 13 quality individuals with reputations for making things happen. I’m confident that our goal to create a Hospice House will continue to take shape under this group’s leadership.”
Despite the Foundation’s youth, the organization has been gaining public awareness rapidly. Individuals with family members who have received hospice care have been particularly drawn to the Foundation’s straightforward goal of providing patients and loved ones with a variety of options for end-of-life care.
This year’s efforts will be led by the following members of the 2013-2014 Board of Directors:
-
Mary T Signorelli, President

Lights of Love a Glowing Cause Since 2005
Lights of Love to purchase physical therapy equipment and fund scholarship in honor of Greta Griffiths
A dozen Lake Chelan Community Hospital (LCCH) Guild B members unrolled spools of brightly-colored lights, draping them over bushes and decorating trees last month, while other guilders assembled a white holiday deer and pulled a wreath over its head. The flurry of activity signaled the beginning of the guild’s annual Lights of Love campaign, which benefits local healthcare.
Donations to Lights of Love, which started in 2005, have purchased several pieces of important hospital since 2005, including a neonatal oximeter for the LCCH childbirth center, an arterial blood gas meter, physical therapy equipment and TeleMedicine monitors for the emergency room.
This year’s funds will purchase a rowing machine for the physical therapy (PT) department. Excellent for those who suffer from chronic neck or upper back pain, as well as low back or hip problems, the machine will be used to supplement aerobic and strength exercise programs for PT patients.
Part of the proceeds from this year’s campaign also funded a $600 scholarship in honor of Greta Griffiths, who passed away in October. One of the first members of Guild B, Griffiths was the first director of the Lake Chelan Volunteer Ambulance Association, which later became a service of LCCH, taught First Aid, CPR and EMT courses and served as a longtime volunteer at the hospital. She also played a large part in starting the Lights of Love campaign. The one-time medical educational scholarship will benefit a LCCH caregiver in 2013.
Lights of Love donations can be given in honor or memory of a loved one, as a friend to the hospital, to recognize someone for a job well done or as a special holiday gift. All donations are tax deductible, and 100% of the proceeds go directly to support the hospital and, this year, the scholarship.
Each of your gifts will be acknowledged, and notification is sent to the honoree or their family, if you wish. You can mail donations to PO Box 2177, Chelan, WA 98816 or visit lakechelanhospital.com to make a donation online.

Local Chelan residents Daneile and Derek Litterel will host a brand new golf tournament at Lake Chelan Golf Gourse on October 14. Proceeds from the Rally for the Cure tournament will support Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation and Susan G. Komen.
“Both my mother and sister are breast cancer survivors,” explains Daneile. “As active golfers, we’ve participated in a lot of tournaments, but this is the first one we’ve hosted. The cause is very personal to us, and we’re excited to raise funds for an issue that impacts so many local families.”
For an entry fee of $20/player plus greens fees, golfers will receive 18-holes of golf at Lake Chelan Golf Course. No handicap is required, making it inclusive to all golfers. Dinner will follow the tournament. Prizes and giveaways from local businesses also will be awarded.
Through contributions from generous Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation supporters, Lake Chelan Community Hospital provides complimentary mammograms to patients needing financial assistance, as well as breast cancer education to local community members. Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation is committed to generating and managing donated assets to provide and improve healthcare facilities and services in its hospital district.
“We’re thrilled that the Hospital Foundation was selected as a recipient of a portion of the proceeds from this event,” said Foundation President Steve Palmbush. “Donations to our organization are kept right here in our community—so they have the opportunity to benefit your neighbor, sister, or friend.”
Rally for the Cure is a grassroots program that works to spread awareness about breast health and breast cancer in support of Susan G. Komen. Its mission is to empower people to join the fight against breast cancer by educating their friends, family and community on the importance of early detection through volunteer organized golf, tennis and social events. Donations go towards funding life-saving breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.
Golfers can sign up for the tournament at Lake Chelan Golf Course, or by calling Daneile Litterel at 509-682-7097. Event day registration begins at 8am. Players will begin with a shotgun start at 9am.
For additional information, contact Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation at 509-682-6125. Donations to the Foundation can be made at www.lcchfoundation.comor sent to PO Box 1911, Chelan, WA 98816.
