The Caribou Trail League (CTL) Tournament is the first layer of the tennis post-season, and is the qualifier for the District VI tournament. It was held in Cashmere on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13, off and on the courts due to rain delays. Chelan did very well, with athletes placing in all four brackets.
Freshman Emma McLaren won her opener over Skylar Strean of Cashmere 6-0, 6-0, advancing her to the double elimination portion of the bracket. However, Emma lost her second round match to Jenna Bucsko 6-4, 6-1. Emma rebounded with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alexandra Barragan of Cascade, but picked up her second loss of the tourney to state veteran Aleah Kert of Cashmere. In her final match of Saturday, Emma defeated Hayley Wyllson of Omak to claim fifth and secure the alternate spot to the District Tournament.
Junior Sydney Hawkins won her crucial opener over Jackie Suastegui of Omak in dramatic fashion 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). That win pitted Hawkins against #2 seed Aleah Kert of Cashmere, who defeated Sydney in straight sets.
“Sydney also lost her subsequent match to Hayley Wyllson to finish her season,” Coach Marty Rothlisberger said. “However, Sydney made dramatic improvements in 2017, and will be a vital contributor to the squad in 2018.”
Junior Azzia MacDonald lost to Hayley Wyllson in her opening match, which eliminated her from the tournament. “Azzia had a great rookie season, and we’re excited to have her tall frame back next year to crush balls at the net,” Rothlisberger said.
Senior Bryce Robison entered the tournament as the #2 seed, and that’s where he also finished. Bryce had a first round bye, won his quarterfinal over Ivan Sanchez of Omak 6-0, 6-0, and won his semifinal in comeback fashion over Devyn Grillo of Omak 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Bryce lost the Championship match to ‘CTL Player of the Year’ Tyler Kert of Cashmere. Bryce will enter the district tournament as a #2 seed.
Sophomore Wyatt Habich opened his tournament against Sam Keziah of Cascade, and lost in straight sets. “Wyatt was a key contributor to the boys team’s undefeated season this year, and due to his athleticism, has a bright future in the sport,” Rothlisberger said.
Senior Bradley Castro played his opening match against Finn Johnson of Cascade, but lost in straight sets. “Likewise, Bradley had a great senior season and won a lot of matches for our squad,” Rothlisberger said.
Sophomore Sierra Rothlisberger and junior Madeline Peebles had a first round bye, and won their quarterfinal over Smith and Dixon of Okanogan 6-3, 6-2. Sierra and Madeline lost their semifinal v.s cousins Alex and Jennifer O’Dell of Omak. That forced an unfortunate match vs. teammates Nora Hollingsworth and Abby Martin, with the loser being out, and winner advancing to districts. Rothlisberger and Peebles won the Chelan vs. Chelan battle, but lost the subsequent third place/ fourth place match to Cascade. Rothlisberger and Peebles enter the district tournament as a #4 seed.
Senior Nora Hollingsworth and sophomore Abby Martin had a great tournament, opening with a do-or-die win over Gonzalez/Jagia 6-4, 6-1. That earned them a quarterfinal matchup vs. #1 seed and 2016 State tournament runners-up Walker/Patrick from Okanogan. After a loss to Okanogan, Hollingsworth and Martin stayed alive in the tourney by defeating McCune and Hack of Omak in an exciting three set match 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 That win resulted in the two Chelan doubles teams facing each other. After the loss to Rothlisberger and Peebles, Nora and Abby won their fifth place/ sixth place match in three sets to secure the alternate spot for districts.
Chelan’s boys doubles teams had the best showing in the tournament, going undefeated until the faced each other in the championship match. This was the second year in a row that these two Chelan doubles teams made it to the championship match!
Seniors Henry Elsner and Rylan Anderson had a first round bye, won their quarterfinal 6-0, 6-0, won their semifinal 6-3, 6-2 over Cashmere, and then faced teammates Collin Hendricks and Micah Larson in the finals.
Senior Collin Hendricks and junior Micah Larson also had a first round bye, won their quarterfinal over Omak 6-4, 6-2, and won their semifinal over #1 seed Okanogan 6-4, 6-2. The Championship match was a back-and-forth affair, with Hendricks and Larson winning the championship for the second year in a row, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Hendricks and Larson will enter the District tournament as the #1 seed, Elsner and Anderson as the #2 seed.
