On Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, the Chelan High School Girls Soccer Team took on the Tonasket Tigers at Mountain Goat Field, but lost in a close match 3-2.
Coach Michael Tucker reported that Tonasket came out strong, and that the Lady Goats started out slow. “We did not communicate well enough and were caught watching the ball,” Coach Tucker said. “This allowed Tonasket to make easy passes out of pressure and have uncontested shots on goal.”
Goalkeeper and sophomore Ashley Sams racked up 19 saves on the day and kept the Lady Goats in the game. “We did not play with confidence, and after several frantic defensive stops, in the 20th minute, Tonasket was able to find the back of the net,” Tucker said.
Ten minutes later, Tonasket would score again to lead at the half 2-0.
In the second half Chelan came out with more energy. Freshman Wendy Mendez stole the ball 40 yards from goal and took it to the goal to bring Chelan’s score to one. Eight minutes later, freshman Salma Bravo found Mendez again, who beat two defenders to tie the ball game up.
Chelan was able to create scoring opportunities, but also gave up several opportunities through out the second half. Tucker said that the game could have been dramatically different either way.
“After tying the game, we lost our sense of urgency and unfortunately gave up a late goal to lose the game 3-2,” Tucker said. “Our energy level and communication improved in the second half, but we are going to have to be more disciplined as a team to start playing at the level we should be.”
The Lady Goats play their next match on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in Omak. the game begins at 4:30 p.m.
