Chelan’s Girls Soccer hosted the Okanogan Bulldogs at home on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017. The game was started early because of daylight concerns, and it proved to be a wise decision.
“It was a back and forth affair with Okanogan all night,” Coach Michael Tucker said. “Both teams had their opportunities, both teams made mistakes, but neither team could find the back of the net in the first half.”
He continued, “Our goalkeeper Ashley Sams had some big saves and was quick off her line to clean up through balls and support her back four.”
The second half the game would open up for both teams. Okanogan would strike first when Chelan had a miscue on their back line, and Okanogan’s forward had a great finish.
A few minutes later, as Okanogan scrambled to clear the ball off their 18, Chelan’s Jade Hatherell was able to knock the ball through to Wendy Mendez who found the side netting and brought the game even at 1-1.
Ten minutes later, Chelan missed a mark on defense gave Okanogan an easy goal and a 2-1 lead. With 11 minutes left in the half, a short clearance off of a free kick came back to Chelan’s Giselle Lara who sent a well-paced ball through to Mendez, who again brought Chelan up to even the score at 2-2.
“We continued to have chances as did Okanogan,” Tucker said. “Yasmin Granados would clear a ball off the line moments before the whistle to send us into extra time.”
Neither team could find the back of the net in extra time, so the two teams headed to a shootout.
Chelan would miss their first two shots, and have two shots saved, while goalkeeper Ashley Sams saved one. Okanogan then scored two goals to secure the win that gave them an extra point. The final score was Okanogan 3, Chelan, 2.
“We definitely lost our composure at times in the second half but continued to battle and had chances,” Tucker said. “It was a much better game, and we look to continue to improve each game.”
The team heads to Wahluke on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017.
