Chelan athletes well-represented at NCW Sports Award Ceremony

Several Chelan High School (CHS) athletes, one coach and one team were nominated for possible awards at the NCW Awards Ceremony on June 6, 2017. On Junes 6, 2017, the 47th Annual NCW Sports Awards and the Wenatchee Valley College Hall of Fame Ceremony took place at Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee

Lake Chelan native and current New York Nets NBA player Joe Harris, Jr. was the keynote speaker. Joe Harris, Jr. was introduced by his father and retired Lake Chelan High School basketball coach Joe Harris Sr., who coached his son during a high school career that saw him ranked as the no. 32 shooting guard and the no. 119 overall player in the nation in 2010.

Several Chelan High School (CHS) athletes, one coach and one team were nominated for possible awards, including Henry Elsner, Katie Gleasman, Bryce Robison, Zach Phelps, Coach Jeff Pearl and the CHS Boys Cross Country Team.

Chelan Senior Henry Elsner took home the 2017 Male Scholar Athlete Award which included a $1,500 scholarship. Each year a committee of Wenatchee North Rotarians selects one female and one male student athlete to honor at the annual banquet and awards ceremony. Kalea Bokma of Eastmont High School was awarded the 2017 Female Scholar Athlete Award.

These scholarships are awarded to the students who best represent through achievements in academics and sports what it means to be a scholar and an athlete and whose contributions to school and community fit the spirit of the Rotary Motto “Service above Self”. Candidates from 14 of the 26 schools in NCW applied and this year’s applicant pool was of exceptionally high standard.

Henry Elsner plans to attend California Polytech State University. He earned a National Merit Scholar Commendation and already has 39 college credits. He was captain of the cross country team and played tennis and basketball, was the student liaison representative on the school board, president of the Interact Club and Honor Society. Congratulations Henry!

Kalea Bokama plans to attend Wenatchee Valley College. Kalea was a captain in soccer, basketball and track earning 11 athletic Varsity Letters. She earned a Varsity Letter for Community Service, was a member of the Eastmont HS Senate, and volunteered for cleanup work after the Carlton Complex Fire. Congratulations Kalea!

Both scholar athletes are 4.0 GPA valedictorians who took on an advanced and challenging curriculum across the spectrum from fine arts via humanities to the sciences to which they added their other outstanding activities.

  • 2017 Female Athlete of the Year: Jill Townsend, Okanogan High School 
  • 2017 Male Athlete of the Year: Tyler Kert, Cashmere High School
  • 2017 Male Team Coach of the Year: Dave Mitchell, Tonasket School District
  • 2017 Female Team of the Year: Eastmont High School Bowling
  • 2017 Male Team of the Year: Tonasket Wrestling Tonasket School District
  • 2017 Spirit Award: Nathan Douglas Greene, Ephrata High School 
  • Wenatchee Valley College Athlete of the Year: Amber Writer
  • 2017 NWAC Sports Champions: Wenatchee Valley College Softball: 
  • Wenatchee Valley College Hall of Fame Inductees: Gene Baker and John Murio
  • Rugrat Nation Basketball Scholarship a Foundation for Youth by Elite Hoop Effects:  Kameron Goetz of Almira-Coulee-Hartline High School 
  • 2017 Don Elliston President’s Award: Bruce Bennett
