SOAP LAKE – On Monday, Aug, 21, 2017, a Coulee City man lost his life in a fatal motorcycle accident on State Route 17 about 13 miles north of Soap Lake. The accident occurred at 12:26 p.m. at milepost 89 between Coulee City and Soap Lake.

Benjamin Coates, 78 years old, was riding a 2011 Harley Davidson Tri Glide Ultra motorcycle southbound on SR 17. Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers reported that Coates attempted to pass three cars in a no passing zone before a curve. When Coates moved back into the southbound lane, he lost control and struck a rock wall, ejecting him from the bike.

Coates died at the scene.

WSP reported that speed and passing in a no passing zone by Coates caused of the accident.
