Time: 3:00 pm
Temperature: 30 degrees
Base Snow:
New Snow: 1-2" new

The Ridge received just enough to make for some great daytime grooming.

Today I went out on the following trails with the LMC (track and 8'-10' corduroy):

Nuthatch, Windsinger, Upsy Daisy and all of the trails out of the lower parking lot.

Mark is out on the following trails with the new Skandic and 6' Tidd:

Chickadee, Grand Drop, Far East, Big Critter, Ridgeview, Morning Glory and Little Critter.

Conditions are top notch on the trails and we thank the County truck and driver for doing such a fine job of sanding the Ridge road. I'll pick up a few more trails tonight with the LMC and then again on Friday night.

Check that waning moon!

Holden Village Welcomes Forest Service Decision
PHP-Nuke Greg Kennedy - February 9, 2012

Holden Village Welcomes Forest Service Decision
By Holden Village Publications Coordinator Mary Koch
Directors at the popular North Cascades wilderness retreat center, Holden Village, welcomed the recent U.S. Forest Service Record of Decision (ROD), which clears the way for a major clean-up of decades-old mining wastes adjacent to the village.

Holden Village does not bear any financial responsibilities for the remediation, but the project will impact the village’s program, noted Steph and Chuck Carpenter, the village’s wife and husband co-director team.

“Since the ROD is a complex, lengthy document, we are still reviewing it,” said Chuck Carpenter, “but we are very happy that the decision has been made and the remediation process will move forward. Holden intends to fully support the mine remediation project, which addresses two of our core values – ecology and stewardship of this beautiful yet fragile alpine valley.”

Steph Carpenter noted that the village is in the midst of planning an especially celebratory 2012 summer program, observing Holden’s 50th anniversary as a Lutheran retreat center. Limited remediation work will also be underway during the summer, but major construction is not scheduled until 2013.

The Forest Service, which released the ROD Jan. 27, has described this as the largest and most complex mine cleanup project within the national forest system. Holden Village is located on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. It draws up to 7,000 visitors who travel by boat up Lake Chelan annually to participate in the village’s year-around programs. That number of guests will necessarily be reduced in 2013-14, which are expected to be peak construction periods when the village will be filled with hundreds of workers.

“The Holden Village mission is to welcome all people, whether it’s our traditional guests or remediation workers,” said Steph Carpenter.

The village also intends to use this “unusual time” to make improvements to its own infrastructure and facilities, said Chuck Carpenter. This may include expansion of the village’s limited hydro-electric system, water mains and building improvements within the federally-mandated restrictions covering historic sites.

The village was originally constructed to house mine workers during mining operations from 1938 to 1957. The mine abruptly closed when profitability of copper mining declined, leaving behind 300,000 cubic yards of waste rock and about 8.5 million tons of mine tailings covering about 90 acres. Another issue is toxic water seeping from the mine cavity into Railroad Creek, which drains into Lake Chelan.

Holden Village has operated since 1962 as a non-profit Lutheran retreat center open to people of all faiths. As remediation work accelerates, Holden will offer off-site events and various ways for long-time constituents and visitors to remain in touch and involved with the village, said the Carpenters. More information is available on the village Web site at www.holdenvillage.org.

PUD Predicts Ample Runoff for 2012 Season
From a PUD press release:
Feb. 1 Lake Chelan runoff forecast is 100 percent of average

The first runoff forecast of the season for the Lake Chelan Basin is now posted on the PUD website. The amount of runoff is forecast at 100 percent of average. Scott Buehn, PUD resource engineer/analyst, based his calculations on a range of information and analysis including automated Snotel data and snowpack measurements collected last week during a helicopter trip into the mountains above Lake Chelan.

The forecast will be updated on March 1 and April 1. Last year the actual runoff from snow melt into Lake Chelan from April 1-July 31 was 126 percent of average.

The elevation of Lake Chelan on Feb. 1, 2012, was 1087.5 feet above sea level, which is 0.4 feet higher than the expected average under the current operating license and 0.5 feet lower than last year.

Generation at the Lake Chelan Hydro Project will be managed this winter and spring with the intent of meeting operating objectives in the Lake Chelan Hydro Operating License as well as minimum lake elevation targets.

Library Receives $5,000 Donation From Spokane Foundation
News With Richard Uhlhorn Richard Uhlhorn - February 8, 2012
The Wall at the Chelan Public Library is beginning to show signs of activity.
Library Receives $5,000 Donation From Spokane Foundation
By Richard Uhlhorn (from information submitted by Mary Sherer)
Don Peters, a Spokane CPA and director of the Roy and Leona Nelson Foundation, arranged a $5,000 donation to the Chelan Friends of the Library for the renovation of the former Masonic Temple, bringing the total amount raised so far to $17,585.

Peters, who grew up in Manson keeps tabs on his old home town through the local paper. He likes to keep up on local events and thought that helping expand the library was an excellent use of foundation money. The other foundation directors agreed and the $5,000 grant was added to the wall at the Chelan Library.

Peters and his brother John who lives in the old family home in Manson, are the sons of Modest Peters who built and ran the Mason Supply Company for nearly 50 years.

Roy and Leona Nelson set put their foundation to offer college scholarships to ambitious students from eastern Washington and north Idaho.

Roy was an engineering student at Washington State University, served in the U.S. Army during WWII and after the war, started his own mining brokerage firm. After retiring, Roy went back to school and attended classes on better farming methods.

Leona, a registered nurse, was an avid reader.

During their lives, the Nelsons foundation helped many students pay for a college education, which is a tradition the foundation continues to this day.
Currently, $17,585 dollars have been donated to the renovation of the Masonic Temple for a new library space.
Since its inception, the foundation has awarded over $600,000 in college scholarships including some from the Lake Chelan area. The foundation has also donated over $200,000 to charities.

The Chelan Friends of the Library are in the process of raising $160,000 to help with the renovation of the old Masonic Temple that was purchased by the City as the new location for the local library.

While larger donations as described above are always welcome, it is good to remember that a dollar is a dollar is a dollar = $3 bucks. In other words, smaller donations are also needed to help make that goal of $160,000.

The Chelan Library has a large bottle out for patrons to donate change and bills. These smaller donations will make a huge difference in reaching the goal.

The new library space at the Masonic Temple will include the following new amenities:
  1. A Fireside Reading Room for users to relax in a quiet comfortable place to read, use computers, listen to music or books on headsets and enjoy magazines
  2. A Children’s Area designed to accommodate children and parents with children’s books, furniture to scale, activity center and access to an outside play area
  3. A Teen Area with computers for teens go can get together to study and use computers after school until 9 p.m. without disturbing other patrons
  4. The existing Masonic Temple stage will be kept as a community space for exhibits, story telling, poetry reading and presentations
  5. Computer and Study Carrels will be located throughout the library for studying
  6. There will be a Community Technology Meeting Room for groups to use for meetings with a projector, Internet access and smart boards for community use
  7. A large second floor Community Meeting and Activity Room that will be available to the community for meetings and other activities
  8. You can help by picking up an information and donation sheet at the Chelan Library or at Chelan City Hall.

Donations should be made out to the Chelan Friends of the Public Library which is a 501 (3) c non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible. Send your donations to:

Chelan Friends of the Public Library
    P.O. Box 2460
    Chelan, WA 98816

Keeping Lake Chelan Pristine
News With Richard Uhlhorn Richard Uhlhorn - February 8, 2012
Keeping Lake Chelan Pristine
By Richard Uhlhorn
Lake Chelan Watershed Plan Review

Public Meeting on Wednesday, February 8

at Campbell’s Resort from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
In October, 1999, Dr. Charles Goldman, Professor of Limnolgy at UC-Davis and the originator of Lake Tahoe’s research group, visited Lake Chelan at the behest of the Lake Chelan Water Quality Committee.

After flying over the lake and spending some time on the lake, Dr. Goldman addressed an estimated 150 residents of the Lake Chelan Valley at the Chelan Performing Arts Center. The article I wrote regarding that visit can still be read on the Chelan PUD’s website: (http://www.chelanpud.org/relicense/glance/newsclip/3307_1.pdf)

“I’ve seen most of the big lakes in the world,” said Goldman at that time. “Lake Chelan is truly spectacular.”

Today Lake Chelan still ranks as a world class, spectacular, pristine lake, and while there have been subtle changes, the work of the Lake Chelan Water Quality Committee (LCWQC) since 1991 has been instrumental in keeping Lake Chelan pristine.

On Wednesday, February 8, the Lake Chelan Planning Unit will hold a public meeting in the Stehekin Room at Campbell’s Resort from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss the Lake Chelan Watershed Plan with the public.

If you have any interest in the continued environmental stability of the Lake Chelan watershed, this is a meeting where you will hear about and be able to comment on the work that has taken place since 1991 by the Water Quality Committee.

The committee is made up of representatives from Chelan County, the City of Chelan, The Lake Chelan Sewer District, the Lake Chelan Reclamation District, Chelan PUD and the U.S. Forest Service.

Since 1991, the Water Quality Committee has been involved in several water and environmental quality studies and activities in the Lake Chelan basin.
Lake Chelan has been under the scientific microscope of the Lake Chelan Water Quality Committee and the Lake Chelan Watershed Planning Unit since 1991. On Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the Planning Committee will hold a public meeting at Campbell’s Resort to review the draft Watershed Plan. The public is invited to attend and to comment on the plan.
These studies and activities have included the implementation of actions within the areas of sanitary sewage collection and treatment, on-site sewage disposal standards, storm water facilities, boat pump-out stations, agricultural bet-management practices, water quality monitoring and public education programs.

In 1998, the State Legislature passed the Watershed Planning Act to set the framework for developing local solutions to watershed issues on a watershed basis.

The Lake Chelan Watershed Planning Unit was formed with members of the LCWQC and they completed Phase I organizational planning and has since, continued to work on the objectives and activities of the LCWQC under the Watershed Planning Act.

The Phase 2 Water Quantity Assessment was completed in 2009. This assessment summarized the findings of water quality studies to identify water quality conditions and issues in the watershed.

In 2010, the LCWPU completed Phase 2 Habitat Component to summarize the findings for aquatic species studies and to identify aquatic species conditions and issues in the watershed.

In 2011 a draft Phase 3 Watershed Plan was completed and the final draft has been submitted for review and comment. New comments will be addressed and incorporated into the final plan that will be approved by the Planning Unit and submitted to Chelan County for review and approval.

After the plan is approved the Planning Unit will begin to develop a Phase 4 Implementation Plan which will seek funding to support project management and continued activities of the Lake Chelan Watershed Planning Unit.

This public meeting will be an opportunity to voice your concerns or any issues you may have regarding the Planning Units work. Your comments will be recorded and added into the record.

PUD Strategic Planning is Paying Off
PHP-Nuke Greg Kennedy - February 7, 2012
News From the Meeting of the Chelan County PUD Commission - February 6, 2012
From a PUD press release:
Strategic planning helps PUD improve bottom-line financial performance in 2011

By remaining disciplined in its financial policies and capitalizing on a good water year, the Chelan County PUD was able to exceed expectations in 2011 by $14.4 million on its combined financial bottom line. Combined improvement in net assets for the PUD was $17.1 million, compared with a budgeted amount of $2.7 million.

The year-end look was presented Monday to PUD commissioners by Chief Financial/Risk Officer Kelly Boyd. She said long-term financial policies in the Strategic Plan have met most objectives. The only target not quite achieved at this point is combined debt coverage, but it is projected to be in line with targets by 2013 and beyond, bringing all financial measurements within desired ranges.

In line with its Strategic Plan, which carries out what the PUD has heard from customers regarding financial priorities, the PUD is on track to build up reserves for a rainy day, continue reducing debt and maintaining low rates and reliable service by keeping PUD assets in good shape. PUD debt stands at $967 million and is forecast to drop approximately $60 million more per year on average over the next five years.

Above-average runoff from last spring's high snowpack helped the PUD's wholesale power sales exceed budget forecasts in 2011 by $10.6 million. In addition, the PUD held the line on operating expenses and came in $7.1 million below budget.

"We still want to stay the course on our long-term financial strategies," said Boyd, "remaining prudent and disciplined."

Boyd explained that specific PUD services such as water, sewer and fiber optics continue to come up short in paying for themselves, along with the retail electric system. All services rely on money from the PUD's surplus power sales to close the gaps. Thanks to a new hedging program that periodically auctions off a future slice of power production from PUD dams, the wholesale revenues are becoming more stable, minimizing the risk of large swings in electric rates. Boyd said the power hedging program helped offset low market price conditions and bring in $61.1 million for the PUD in 2011. Even with the high snowpack, she said, wholesale power sales would have been below budgeted amounts had the PUD been forced to rely on market sales without the hedging program.

As of Jan. 1, 2012, the PUD ended its 9-percent electric surcharge and replaced it with a 2.5-percent increase from where rates stood in 2008. The average residential rate now of 3.2 cents per kilowatt hour remains second lowest in the nation.

In other action Monday:
  • Commissioners reviewed the proposed change in industrial rates that will allow users who are bumping up against the cap of 5 average megawatts to use one additional megawatt at predetermined market price - as long as the customer does not exceed 5 average MW for the year. A final hearing on the rate change is scheduled at 1 p.m. March 19.
  • Board members scheduled a series of public meetings to present results of extensive customer research and other outside analysis that will be considered in developing an updated strategic plan for the fiber-optic network. The first meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Confluence Technology Center. The meeting, which is expected to last several hours, will also be videotaped for the PUD website and streamed live on the Internet that evening for those who may not be able to attend in person. Additional meetings in communities will be scheduled, and a fiber plan is expected to be finalized in April.
  • Commissioners approved boundary changes in PUD commissioner districts 1, 2 and 3 to match the Chelan County commissioner districts as revised following the latest federal census; there are no changes to at-large districts A and B.

Manson Hosts Knowledge Bowl Contest and Places Third
Manson Knowledge Bowl Team #1 placed 3rd on Monday, Feb. 1st at the Manson Knowledge Bowl Tournament. The schools in the Southwest Washington District that sent teams to compete were Manson, Chelan, Wenatchee, Waterville, Moses Lake, Ephrata, Cashmere and Quincy. Manson had a total of six teams competing in the bowl.
Manson’s Team #1 was Jesse Russell, Marcus Vanderholm, Alexis Rapozo, and Devin Griffith. These four students are returning members from last year who brought home the 2B Northwest Regional Champions award and now have their sights set on taking the 2B region again at State this year. Upcoming regional competitions occur in February and early March. The top 18 teams in each division (top 9 in 1B division) will then advance to the state tournament held in early April.
It takes many volunteers to facilitate the Knowledge Bowl and with this many thanks are given to Readers; Tim Bombaci, Celeste Thomas, Don Vanderholm, Dean Morehead, Ken Nelson, Jama England, Nancy Miller, Julie Russell, Ellen Picton, and Lou Picton, plus the timers (who were mostly the other team’s coach) from Moses Lake, Ephrata, Cascade, Cashmere, Quincy, Wenatchee, Waterville, and Nathan O’Halloran. Power Line Work at East End of Woodin Monday
PHP-Nuke Greg Kennedy - February 4, 2012
Power Line Work at East End of Woodin Monday
Dan Baker of the City of Chelan Public Works informs us that on Monday, February 6, Chelan PUD crews will be working on overhead power lines across East Woodin Ave (SR97A) at the intersection with Washington Street. This is adjacent to Lake Chelan Floor Covering and the football field, and Palazzo Ponds and Apple Inn Motel.

The work will require closure of the inside lanes in each direction. Except for an occasional very short delay, the outside lanes in each direction will remain open. Flaggers and construction signage will be on scene to assist motorists' passage through the work zone.

Work will commence approximately 8 a.m. and should be complete before 5 p.m. on Monday.

Alice Bumgarner Was Inspiration to the Lake Chelan Community
PHP-Nuke Greg Kennedy - February 3, 2012
Alice Bumgarner Was Inspiration to the Lake Chelan Community
Alice Brandon Bumgarner, 98, a longtime resident of Manson, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2012.
From the family-submitted obituary:

As Ingpen wrote in his book, "Lifetimes", every living thing has a beginning and an end and in between is the living. For Alice Brandon Bumgarner, the beginning came January 21, 1913, and the end came January 9, 2012. For Alice, it was the living in between that was so remarkable. Countless adults and children were mothered, mentored and inspired by Alice's wisdom and generosity.

Alice took up painting as her "therapy" after cancer threatened her life. She loved to sketch and paint the beauty and history of this area and documented many of the pioneer structures, later donated to the Lake Chelan Historical Society for the Manson Collection. Alice began to share and to skillfully teach others the joys of painting and crafting. Alice never met a new idea or method of painting or a new craft idea that she didn't want to try. People were always welcome to use her basement as a studio and use her supplies as well. In that studio, lots of eyes were encouraged to see anew, advise was given (if asked for), problems were solved, tears were dried and laughter and fun reigned supreme.

Alice was politically active in defending all peoples' rights. She loved the land and the flowers and gardens that she grew. She loved her cats, birds, friends and family. Alice was deeply rooted in Manson and an enduring part of the fabric of the Art community, helping with shows and classes. We will never know the extent of her influence.

In the morning, Alice was always glad to see her face reflected in her mirror. "If I see my face, I know I am alive and it's going to be a great day!" On this day, she'll miss that image and so will we. Alice was an inspiration; aunt, friend, mentor, haven, good for "down home" advice and a "dressing down," if needed. We will always remember her enthusiastic, "Let's go paint!"

Alice Brandon Bumgarner was the daughter of Jerry and Blanche (Sheppard) Brandon. She was born on the family farm 13 miles from Phillipsburg, Phillips County, Kansas. Alice moved to Manson permanently in 1928. She attended and graduated from Manson High School in 1932. She is survived by her nieces, Joyce Troxel of Burien and Cleo Goodnight of Monroe.

Memorials may be made to the Lake Chelan Historical Society. At her request, No Services will be held. Arrangements are by Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.

Chelan Library Ready for The Next Chapter
PHP-Nuke

Feb 3, 2012 - By Richard Uhlhorn

Today, the Lake Chelan Valley has an opportunity to move the Chelan Public Library into new and, hopefully, final digs… the old Masonic Temple.

After much input from the community about the City’s needs for its over-crowed library, the City purchased the old historic Masonic Temple for the libraries new and final location.

Located on North Emerson Street, the 84-year old Masonic Temple has to be renovated before the library can move in. The total renovation is estimated to cost $650,000 of which the community needs to raise $160,000 as a match towards the total cost.

Mary Sherer, who is heading up the Friends of the Library public relations efforts said, “We had all of this thrown at us in a very short period of time.” The group will be applying for its Community Block Grant at the end of February and would like as many donations and/or pledges towards the $160,000 match as possible. This will show that the community is engaged in this effort.

While the City owns the building, it has passed a resolution that the Library will remain in the Masonic Temple for a minimum of 15 years.

The design of the new space will incorporate some user friendly elements including:

A Fireside Reading Room for users to relax in a quiet comfortable place to read, use computers, listen to music or books on headsets and enjoy magazines; A Children’s Area designed to accommodate children and parents with children’s books, furniture to scale, activity center and access to an outside play area; A Teen Area with computers for teens go can get together to study and use computers after school until 9 p.m. without disturbing other patrons; The existing Masonic Temple stage will be kept as a community space for exhibits, story telling, poetry reading and presentations; Computer and Study Carrels will be located throughout the library for studying There will be a Community Technology Meeting Room for groups to use for meetings. This room will have a projector, Internet access and smart boards for community use; and A large second floor Community Meeting and Activity Room that will be available to the community for meetings and other activities.

“It’s important for the community to buy into this,” said Sherer. “We want people to be excited.”

The Friends of the Library welcome new ideas from the community. “What do you want,” asked Sherer. “We want people to tell us so we can incorporate these ideas into the new space.”

The Friends are looking for donations and pledges. “Even small amounts are welcome,” said Sherer. At the current library there is a newly painted wall that will tally up the donations and pledges as they come in as well as a place for announcements.“We want the wall to become a focal point,” said Sherer

How do you help? Pick up your information and donation sheet at the Chelan Library or at City Hall. Donations should be made to the Chelan Friends of the Public Library. It is a 501(3)c organization; donations are tax deductable. The address is P.O. Box 2460,Chelan WA 98816. Cash, checks and credit cards are all acceptable!

All donors to the library renovation will be recognized and donations over $1,000 will have the names of the donors listed on a permanent plaque in the library. All donations are tax deductible. North Cascades National Bank has opened up a Friends of the Library bank account to handle the donations that come in.

So pick up your information and donation sheet at the Chelan Library or at City Hall.

For more information, contact City Administrator Jim Reinbold at 509-682-4037 or Mary Sherer, Friends of the Library at 509-470-1067.

Congratulations to Chelan High student Lupe Villasenor. Lupe participated in the Society for Range Management 65th Annual Meeting and Trade Show in Spokane January 29th to February 2nd. She was selected to represent the Pacific Northwest Section SRM in the High School Youth Forum. Lupe is also the Chelan FFA Chapter Vice President.

Background:
The High School Youth Forum of the SRM began in 1966 and brings together high school students from the 26 sections of SRM in North America to develop, submit, and present a scientific paper on a Range related topic specific to their section.

Lupe submitted her synopsis in November and was selected to represent Washington from the PNW Section. Her paper entitled Horseshoe Lake Ranch Restoration explored the Chelan Douglas Land Trust restoration project of the Horselake Ranch Property located 4 miles West of Wenatchee.

The Land Trust has begun removing weeds and replanting of native grasses and forbs on 1500 acres. She researched the possibility and feasibility of using prescribed grazing using goats and cattle in the effort to control invasive plant species and bring the ecosystem to a healthy habitat for native animals that utilize it as both summer and winter range.

In addition to the paper presentation, the 24 students who came from all over the US and Canada participated in the professional technical workshops, attended mixers with industry professionals from both the private and public sectors, toured Eastern Washington Rangelands, and conducted the business of the HSYF.

Chelan FFA Advisor, Rod Cool, also attended the SRM Annual Meetings and participated in a variety of technical sessions, trade show, and professional interactions. This will allow him to broaden his instruction of Range and Wildlife units in the Natural Resource Science coursework at Chelan High School.

A New Christmas Tradition
Let's Do It!
Christmas 2011
Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Oh.... Yes there is!

It is time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a Chinese-made flat-screen TV? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a gazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands and purchase their CD's.

Honestly people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Part of Christmas is now about encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we could not imagine.

A physics teacher in high school, once told the students that while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn't slow a train very much, a billion of them would.

With that thought in mind, read the following, obviously written by a good American .
Good idea One light bulb at a time.
The other day, a friend was in Lowes and was looking at the hose attachments. They were all made in China. The next day he was in an Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it, checked the hose attachments there. They were made in USA. Start looking.

In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affects someone else - even their job.

Another friend likes Hershey's candy. We noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now. So he doesn't buy it any more. His favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico now. So he switched to Crest.. You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend we were at a big box store and needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets. In the light bulb aisle, we found the GE brand and an off brand labeled, "Everyday Value." We picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised us the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA at a company in Cleveland, Ohio .

So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here.

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets . . .yep, you guessed it, Bounce cost more money and is made in Canada.

The Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA! I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce I have been using for years and at almost half the price! My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors!

If you accept the challenge, pass this on to others so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time!

Let's stop buying from overseas companies!

We should have awakened a decade ago !!!! let's get with the program . . . help our fellow Americans keep their jobs and create more jobs here in the USA.

Attitude Is Everything
By Charles Swindoll

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.

It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company ...a church ...a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past ...we cannot change the fact that people will act in certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have; and that is our attitude ...I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes" - Charles Swindoll

Tech Geeks & Cowboys

A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in California when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him.

The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and a YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, 'If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?'

Bud looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, 'Sure, Why not?'

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg , Germany .

Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, 'You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.' 'That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,' says Bud.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then Bud says to the young man,'Hey,if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?'

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, 'Okay, why not?'

'You're a Congressman for the U.S.Government', says Bud.

'Wow! That's correct,' says the yuppie, 'but how did you guess that?'

'No guessing required.' answered the cowboy. 'You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don't know a thing about cows...this is a herd of sheep. . . Now give me back my dog!"

$50 is $50

Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, and every year Morris would say, "Esther, I'd like to ride in that biplane and Esther always replied, "I know Morris, but that biplane ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars".

One year Esther and Morris went to the fair, and Morris said, "Esther, I'm 85 years old. If I don't ride that old biplane , I might never get another chance." Esther replied, "Morris that biplane ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars".

The pilot overheard the couple and said, "Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word I won't charge you! But if you say one word, it's 50 dollars." Morris and Esther agreed and up they went.

The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.

When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, "By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!"

Morris replied, "Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Esther fell out, but you know -- 50 dollars is 50 dollars."

Italian Inginuity at Work

An old Italian lived alone in New Jersey.

He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard.

It seems his only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was now in prison... and the old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:

Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year.
I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot I know if you were here my troubles would be over... I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days.

Love, Papa

A few days later he received a letter from his son..

Dear Pop,
Don't dig up that garden.
That's where the bodies are buried.
Love,
Vinnie

At 4 a.m.. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies.

They apologized to the old man and left..

That same day the old man received another letter from his son.

Dear Pop,
Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now..
That's the best I could do under the circumstances.

Love you,
Vinnie
